A note for grown-ups
A lion and then a bear come after the lambs, and although both moments pass in a sentence and everyone ends up safe, the story does say plainly that being a shepherd was sometimes scary. If that unsettles your child, the story's own line is the reassurance: David remembered that God had helped him before, so he trusted God would help him again.

Out on a quiet hillside, far from any city, far from any palace, a boy was playing his harp.
Plink. Plink. Plink.
The sheep weren't really listening. But that was alright.
The boy wasn't really playing for them.
His name was David. And he was the youngest of eight brothers. Eight! His big brothers were tall and strong, with broad shoulders and deep, booming voices. And David? David was the smallest. Ruddy and handsome, with bright shining eyes and cheeks pink from running in the sun.
While his brothers worked the fields, David had a different job. David was a shepherd.
Every morning, before the sun was even fully awake, David led his father's sheep out to the hills. Up green slopes, past silver streams, into wide, quiet meadows where the grass was soft and sweet.
And there, all alone with his sheep, David was perfectly happy. Because David had a secret. David had a friend who was always with him. Even out in the fields where no one else could see... "God was there. And God was with him."
So David would sit on a warm, smooth rock... and pull out his little harp...
...and he would sing. About the sky. About the sheep. About the God who took care of him.
But being a shepherd wasn't all singing. Sometimes... it was scary.
One day, a lion came after the sheep. A lion! With great big paws and hungry yellow eyes. But David remembered — God was his shepherd. And he was the lambs' shepherd. So David grabbed his sling, said a quick prayer, and saved that little lamb.
And another time — another time! — a bear came stomping out of the trees. A great big shaggy bear! And David? David did it again. He charged that bear and rescued his sheep.
"The Lord helped me before," David whispered. "He'll help me now."
Now, while David was out in those quiet fields, something very big was happening far away.
