Bible stories for preschoolers, ages 3 to 5
Thirteen stories chosen for three to five year olds. No battles, nobody dies on the page, and nothing in them leaves you with a conversation you were not ready to have. That rules out about half our catalog, which is exactly why this list exists.
They run from two and a half minutes to nine, so the collection grows with your child. Enoch Walked with God is barely longer than a lullaby. God Creates Light, Sky, and Land takes nine unhurried minutes over the first four days, one thing at a time, which is roughly the pace a four-year-old actually wants.

Old Jacob is nearly blind, propped up on his pillows in Egypt, when Joseph brings in two grandsons he never expected to meet. Joseph places the boys carefully, the older one on the right — and then Jacob's shaking hands do something nobody in the room expects.
Exodus 15:1-21
Miriam Sings by the Red Sea
On the night God's people ran out of Egypt in the dark, somebody reached up and took down a tambourine — and you do not pack a tambourine unless you expect something to celebrate. On the far side of the sea, the girl who once hid in the reeds watching over baby Moses steps out in front of everyone and starts the song.
Exodus 16
God Sends Manna from Heaven
A month into the wilderness the last crumb of bread carried out of Egypt is gone, and hungry people say hard things to Moses. God's answer arrives overnight, scattered across the sand, and nobody can work out what it is.
How to use these at home
Preschoolers follow people, not plots. A four-year-old who cannot tell you what a promise is will still tell you that Sarah laughed, that the giraffe had to duck, and that the dove came back with a leaf. So name the person before you press play. Say we are listening to the one about the lady who laughed, and let the rest arrive on its own.
Every story page lists three things to listen for, and handing your child one of them before the story starts changes how they listen. Give a four-year-old the job of noticing what a builder gets handed when he asks a friend for a brick and they will wait for it, then tell you about it for the rest of the week. It costs you ten seconds and turns passive listening into something they are doing.
The discussion questions work well at this age because they are concrete rather than theological. Noah's Ark and the Great Flood asks which animal would have been hardest to fit through the door. Sarah and the Three Visitors asks why a little bread turned into three sacks of flour. Save them for the next morning rather than bedtime, when a preschooler has had the night to chew on the story and will usually raise it themselves.

- Our rule for this list is that nobody is killed, no fight is described, no one is punished in a scene your child has to watch, and the story ends somewhere settled. Noah's Ark and the Great Flood is here because although the flood happens, the telling stays inside the boat with the family and the animals rather than outside it.
- Which of your stories are not on this list, and why?
- The ones that need a bigger child. David and Goliath ends with a giant falling, Cain and Abel with a brother dead, and Abraham and Isaac on the Mountain with a father asked for something unthinkable. Queen Esther Saves Her People, Moses Crosses the Red Sea, Jacob Wrestles with God and Adam and Eve and the Forbidden Fruit are all excellent stories, but they suit five and up.

- God Makes Adam and Eve, because your child gets to join in naming the animals, and it is over in two and a half minutes. From there, Noah and the Rainbow and Sarah Laughs and Isaac Is Born are the easiest next steps, and Noah's Ark and the Great Flood is the one most preschoolers settle on as their favorite.
