Bedtime Bible stories to listen to before bed

All twenty-eight of our stories are written to be heard at the end of the day. The narration is unhurried, the voice is warm, and nothing in them is built to wake a child up. There are no sudden loud moments and no cliffhangers left hanging over a four-year-old staring at the ceiling.

They run from just over two minutes to eleven. That range is deliberate. On a good night you can put on Noah's Ark and the Great Flood and let it play for seven minutes, and on a night when everything has already taken far too long, Enoch Walked with God is finished in two and a half.

Every story here comes from the Old Testament, mostly Genesis and Exodus, with David, Daniel and Esther alongside them. They are all told for ages 3 to 8, and every one of them ends somewhere settled.

How to use these at home

The simplest way to use these is to give them the same slot every night. Bath, teeth, lights off, then press play. Children settle faster when the order never changes, and an audio story is the one part of the routine that runs itself, so the last thing before sleep is not you negotiating. The stories are written to still work with eyes closed, so nobody has to sit up to follow along.

Listening is a different job from reading aloud, and it takes some weight off you. You are not performing, so you can lie down next to your child instead of holding a book at the right angle in bad light. You can also hand a story over on a night when you have nothing left to give it. What you lose is the ability to quietly skip a page, so it helps to know where a story goes before you start it. Every story page tells you.

Each story also comes with a memory verse, three or four discussion questions, and a short prayer. Bedtime is usually the wrong moment for those. They work far better at breakfast the next morning or in the car, once your child has slept on the story and arrives with a question ready. Where a story touches something hard, like the flood or Cain's anger, the story page carries a note for parents suggesting what to say if it comes up.

On this website you can read most of the stories in full, read the opening of the rest, and hear a free audio preview of every single one. The complete narration, offline downloads and the app's bedtime mode are in the Bible Wonders app. Nothing on these pages has ads, and nothing asks your child to tap anything.

Common questions

How long is each bedtime Bible story?
The shortest is Enoch Walked with God at about two and a half minutes. The longest are Queen Esther Saves Her People and Joseph Interprets Pharaoh's Dreams, both around eleven. Most sit between four and eight minutes, and the narration length is printed on every story card so you can pick one that fits the time you actually have left.
Are any of these too exciting to play right before sleep?
Most are written to settle rather than stir, but a few are not really wind-down stories. David and Goliath, Moses Crosses the Red Sea and Queen Esther Saves Her People all build to something big, and Cain and Abel is the hardest story we tell. Those work better earlier in the evening. The stories in our preschool collection are the safest choice for lights out.
Can my child listen on their own after lights out?
Yes, and that is what the app is built for. Stories can be downloaded so they play with the wifi off, and the app has a bedtime mode for exactly this moment. On the website a preview will play from any phone or tablet browser without an account.
Can I hear a whole story free on this website?
Not the whole narration. Every story here has a free audio preview so you can hear the voice and the pace before you decide, and most of the stories have their complete text on the page if you would rather read it yourself. The full narration of all twenty-eight is in the app.
Which part of the Bible are these stories from?
All twenty-eight are Old Testament. Most come from Genesis and Exodus, with David, Daniel and Esther alongside them. Every story page names the chapters it retells, and the memory verse is quoted from the World English Bible so you can look it up in whichever translation you use at home.
