Elisha and the Invisible Army

How the story begins: 2 Kings 6:8-23, retold for ages 3-8, about 3 minutes to read aloud

Two is a smaller number than an army.

You know that. I know that.

So here is the strangest piece of arithmetic in the whole Bible. One morning, in a little hill town called Dothan, there were two people inside one small house — a prophet and his young helper. And outside, all the way around, an army. Horses. Chariots. Soldiers shoulder to shoulder as far as you could look.

And the prophet counted both sides, and said the army was the smaller one.

Let me show you how that can be true.

It started with a war that never quite managed to happen.

The king of Syria kept making plans. He would gather his officers in a quiet room and say, I will set up my camp here. And every time, the king of Israel somehow knew. His men went the other way, and the trap closed on nothing.

The Syrian king had had enough. He demanded to know which of his officers was telling.

And one of them said, "None of us, my lord the king. It is Elisha, the prophet in Israel. He tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom."

Imagine hearing that. That somewhere, in another country, a man knew what you whispered with the door shut.

So the king gave an order. Find him. And word came back: he is in Dothan.

They came at night. Horses and chariots and a strong force, moving in the dark, and by morning they had gone all the way around that little town — a ring of them, closed like a hand.

Elisha's young helper got up early. He stepped outside, still rubbing his eyes. And he looked out over the wall.

"Oh, my master! What shall we do?"

Quick answers about Elisha and the Invisible Army

Why did the king of Syria want to capture Elisha?
Every time the king planned where to camp, Elisha warned the king of Israel, who stayed away from that place. One of the Syrian officers said Elisha told Israel's king even the words spoken in the Syrian king's bedroom (2 Kings 6:8-12).
What did Elisha's servant see when his eyes were opened?
The mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha (2 Kings 6:17). They had been there all along; the servant just could not see them until Elisha prayed.
What did Elisha do with the Syrian army?
God struck the soldiers blind, and Elisha led them to Samaria, where their eyes were opened. Elisha told the king of Israel not to harm them but to give them food and water, and after the feast the Syrian raids stopped (2 Kings 6:18-23).

Questions to ask

  • The young helper looked over the wall and cried, "What shall we do?" What would you have said if you had been standing next to him?
  • Elisha did not pray for a way out. He prayed, "Open his eyes, that he may see." Why do you think he prayed for that?
  • The horses and chariots of fire were on the hills the whole time. What is something good around you that might be easy to miss?
  • Instead of fighting the soldiers, Elisha had the king give them a feast and send them home. Why do you think that made the raids stop?
