How it begins
Jacob's Ladder

He ran.
He ran until his legs ached. He ran until the sun went down and the stars came out and there was nothing around him but rocks and wind and darkness.
His name was Jacob. And that night... Jacob was all alone.
Now, do you remember Jacob? He was the younger twin — the one who tricked his brother Esau. The one who took something that wasn't meant for him. Well... Esau found out. And Esau was angry. So angry that Jacob's mother whispered, "Run, my son. Run far away, before your brother finds you."
So Jacob ran. Away from his mother's arms. Away from his father's tent. Away from everything he had ever known.
And now the sun was gone. The sky was black and enormous, filled with more stars than anyone could ever count. The wind blew cold across the hills. And Jacob stood there, all alone, in a place he had never been before... with nowhere to sleep and no one to hold him.
He looked around. There were no soft beds out here. No warm blankets. No pillow. Just... rocks. Hard, bumpy, dusty rocks.
Jacob picked up a stone — just one of the stones lying there — and set it under his head. A stone. For a pillow. Can you imagine? Laying your head down on a cold, hard rock?
He curled up on the ground. The dirt pressed into his cheek. The wind tugged at his clothes. And Jacob — the trickster, the runaway — felt smaller than he had ever felt in his whole life.
And the word that filled his whole chest was alone. All... alone.
His eyes grew heavy. His breathing slowed. And there, on the hard ground, with a stone beneath his head and nothing but darkness all around him...
Jacob fell asleep.
And then... he dreamed.
Oh, little one. What a dream. The kind of dream you never want to wake up from. The kind of dream that changes everything.
