Samuel Hears God Call
The whole story: 1 Samuel 3, retold for ages 3-8, about 5 minutes to read aloud
"Samuel."
A boy's eyes opened in the dark. The temple was quiet — so quiet. The only light was the soft golden glow of God's lamp, still flickering, not yet gone out. Shadows danced on the stone walls. And somewhere in that darkness, someone had said his name.
"Did someone just say my name?"
Samuel sat up on his mat and padded across the dark floor to old Eli. "Here I am! You called me!" But Eli only shook his sleepy head. "I did not call, my son. Lie down again." So Samuel went back and listened. Nothing. Just the sound of old Eli breathing in the next room.
Now, do you remember the baby Hannah prayed for? The one she cried and cried for at the temple, until she promised God, "If you give me a son, I will give him back to you"? Samuel is that baby, all grown up. Well — not all grown up. He was still a boy. But he lived in God's temple, helping old Eli the priest, just like his mother promised.
And in those days, the word of the Lord was rare. God hardly ever spoke to anyone. No one heard visions. No one heard voices. The world had gone quiet.
Until tonight.
"Samuel!"
There it was again! Loud and clear — his own name, called right through the darkness! Samuel threw off his blanket and ran to Eli's room.
"Here I am! You called me!"
Old Eli blinked. "I did not call you, son. Go back to bed."
So Samuel padded back to his mat. He lay down. He pulled his blanket up. He closed his eyes.
"Samuel!"
A third time! Samuel jumped up again and ran — barefoot, heart pounding — straight to Eli.
"Here I am! You called me — I heard you!"
Eli sat very still. And then — slowly, slowly — the old priest understood. His eyes went wide. It wasn't Eli calling the boy. It was God.
Eli took Samuel's hands and said, very gently, "Go lie down again. And if he calls you, say this: 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'"
So Samuel went back. He lay down in the dark, under the golden glow of that little lamp. His heart was beating fast. The temple was quiet.
And then the Lord came. And stood right there. And called, just like before —
"Samuel! Samuel!"
And this time, the boy didn't run. He didn't jump up. He stayed right where he was, and he whispered —
"Speak... for your servant is listening."
And God spoke to Samuel that night. The message wasn't easy — sometimes God's words are hard. But Samuel listened, every word, and he learned to be a prophet who always told the truth. In the dark. In the quiet. To a boy — not a king, not a warrior, not a priest. A boy, lying on his mat, who was willing to listen.
You know, little one, sometimes God doesn't shout. He doesn't send thunder or lightning. Sometimes he speaks in the quiet, in the dark, when everything else is still.
And you don't have to be old to hear him. You don't have to be important. Samuel was just a boy. Lying in bed. A lot like you, right now.
All you have to do is listen.
And God was with him. God was with her. God is with you, too.
Rest easy, little one. May the same God who spoke a boy's name in the dark, beside a lamp still burning, be the voice you hear in your own quiet.
