God shapes the first person out of plain brown dust, plants a garden full of rivers and fruit trees, and hands Adam the job of naming every animal that walks past. But when the last creature has its name, something in the garden is still not finished.

The whole story
God Makes Adam and Eve
Genesis 2 · retold for ages 3-8 · about 4 minutes to read aloud
Dust. Plain, brown, ordinary dust. That is what God chose for the very first person.
The Bible says God formed a man from the dust of the ground. Then God breathed the breath of life into him.
Breath filled him... and the man became alive. His name was Adam.
Then God planted a garden in the east, in a place called Eden. A river flowed through it, and every kind of tree grew there — trees that were beautiful to look at and good for food.
In the garden stood two special trees. One was the tree of life. The other was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God told Adam he could eat from the trees of the garden, but he must not eat from that one tree.
God put Adam in the garden to work it and take care of it.
Then God said something important: "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is right for him."
So God brought the animals to Adam, and Adam gave them names.
The Bible does not tell us which names Adam chose. But imagine the parade: creatures that lumbered, hopped, stretched high, or scurried low; birds sweeping past while Adam named them.
Whatever Adam called each living creature — that was its name.
But when the naming was done, no helper had been found who was right for Adam.
Adam was still alone.
God saw what Adam needed. So God caused a deep sleep to fall over him.
While Adam slept, God took part of Adam's own side and made a woman. Then God brought her to him.
The woman who would be called Eve stood before him.
And when Adam saw her, he knew at once: here was someone like him.
"This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh!"
At last.
God had seen that Adam was alone. God had known what he needed. And God had made a companion who could stand beside him, speak with him, work with him, and share the garden with him.
God answered the loneliness He had named, and Adam welcomed the companion God brought to him with joy.
The first two people stood together in the garden God had planted, surrounded by every good thing He had given them.
And God was with him. God was with her. God is with you, too.
May the God who breathed life into dust, planted a garden, and answered loneliness surround you with joy in every good gift and every companion He places beside you.

Questions to ask
- God made the first person out of dust from the ground. If you could make something wonderful out of anything at all, what would you use?
- Adam gave a name to every single animal. Which animal would you have wanted to name, and what would you have called it?
- The garden had rivers and fruit trees and animals, and Adam was still lonely. What helps you feel less lonely?
- God said it is not good to be alone. Who are the people God has put beside you?

A prayer for bedtime
Thank You, God, for making the world beautiful and for making people to share it with. Thank You for the family and friends You put beside me. Help me take care of them, the way Adam took care of the garden. Amen.
