Before you listen

A little setup—without giving away the story.

Joseph receives a bright, beautiful coat—and discovers that a special gift can stir up very complicated feelings in a family. The story gently introduces dreams, jealousy, and the beginning of Joseph's long journey.

Listen for these moments

  1. 1What makes Joseph's coat so special
  2. 2The unusual dreams Joseph shares
  3. 3How one difficult day begins a much bigger story

A note for grown-ups

The brothers' jealousy turns cold in this story—they cannot say a kind word to Joseph—and older children may know it ends with them selling him away. It helps to name the feeling plainly: the brothers were jealous, jealousy made them unkind, and God stayed with Joseph anyway.

The whole story

Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors

Genesis 37:1-11 · retold for ages 3-8 · about 7 minutes to read aloud

He had eleven brothers.

Eleven. Can you imagine? A whole field full of brothers — some older, some younger — and every one of them out under the same big sky, watching the same big flock of sheep.

His name was Joseph. And this story is true — older than your grandma, and older than your grandma's grandma.

Joseph was seventeen years old. He lived a long, long time ago, in a land of golden hills and quiet rivers, where shepherds walked beside their sheep and the sky stretched on forever.

Their father's name was Jacob. And Jacob loved all his sons. But Joseph? Well, Joseph was extra special to him. Because Joseph was born when Jacob was already an old, old man. Every time Jacob looked at Joseph, his heart felt warm, like a cup of honey tea on a cold morning.

So one day, Jacob decided to do something wonderful.

He went into his tent. And he began to make Joseph a gift.

Father Jacob made Joseph a special robe — long, with sleeves all the way to his wrists, and stitched with bright colors. The kind of robe a prince might wear. Not a working robe. A robe for someone who was very loved.

Imagine you're standing right next to Joseph as Jacob holds it up. Your eyes go wide. Your mouth drops open. Because oh my goodness — look at it.

There was red — deep, glowing red, like the sky right when the sun goes to sleep.

There was blue — not just any blue, but the deepest, dreamiest blue, like the sky high above the clouds where only the birds fly.

There was gold — shimmering, glimmering gold, like warm honey dripping slowly off a spoon.

There was green — soft and bright, like the very first blades of spring grass after the rain.

And there was purple — rich, royal purple, like the robe of a king.

Joseph held it in his hands. And he could hardly breathe.

For me, Father? he whispered.

And Jacob smiled, and wrapped that robe around his shoulders, and said, For you, my son. Because you are precious to me.

Oh, Joseph loved that robe. He wore it everywhere.

Now, his big brothers — hmm. They saw the robe, and their faces got dark. They didn't have robes like that. And when they looked at Joseph in his beautiful sleeves, something hard grew inside them.

They couldn't even say a kind word to him. Not 'good morning.' Not 'pass the bread.' Nothing kind.

But Joseph was a dreamer. And something even more amazing was about to happen.

That very night, when Joseph laid his head down to sleep, he had a dream.

The first dream was about wheat in the field. Joseph and his brothers were tying the wheat into big bundles called sheaves. And then — the strangest thing. Joseph's bundle stood up. All by itself. Tall and straight, right in the middle of the field.

And then his brothers' bundles — eleven of them — gathered all around his. And bowed down. Slowly. Gently.

Eleven bundles. Bowing to one.

Joseph woke up with his eyes shining. In the morning, he ran to his brothers. "Listen, listen! I had the most amazing dream. Your bundles bowed down to my bundle!"

His brothers did not love this story. Not even a little bit. They crossed their arms. They frowned. And they liked him even less than before.

But the second dream was even bigger.

The next night, Joseph dreamed again. And this time, imagine you're floating up, up, up into the night sky. The air is cool. The world is quiet. And all around you — stars. Eleven shining, glittering stars, twinkling like tiny diamonds.

And the sun was there. And the moon was there too. And one by one, gently and softly, they all bowed down to Joseph.

The sun, the moon, and eleven stars — all bowed down to Joseph.

Eleven stars. One for each brother.

When Joseph told his family about this dream, even his father raised an eyebrow. "What kind of dream is this, my son? Are your mother and I and your brothers going to bow down to you?"

Father Jacob shook his head when Joseph told him the second dream. But later — when he was alone, when the lamps were out — he thought about it. He kept those dreams in his heart. He wondered.

Because Jacob knew — sometimes God speaks to us in dreams. And sometimes, special dreams come true in ways we can't yet imagine.

You know, little one — God gave Joseph a beautiful coat from his father. And He gave him beautiful dreams too. But the most beautiful gift of all was that God was right there with him.

There would be hard days ahead for Joseph. Days when the dreams seemed very far away. But Joseph would learn to whisper a little promise, again and again. Just four words.

God can. God will.

And God was with him. God was with her. God is with you, too.

May the same God who gave Joseph beautiful dreams fill your heart with His promises, wherever you go.

Questions to ask

  • Joseph's coat had red, blue, gold, green and purple in it. If someone made you a coat, which colors would you ask for?
  • The brothers felt something hard grow inside them when they saw the coat. What do you do when someone else gets something you wanted?
  • Joseph ran straight to his brothers to tell them his dream. Was that a good moment to tell it, or should he have waited?
  • Jacob kept Joseph's dreams in his heart and wondered about them. What is something you have been wondering about lately?

Memory verse

“Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a coat of many colors.”
