Ruth's Baby Obed

The whole story: Ruth 4, retold for ages 3-8, about 4 minutes to read aloud

Naomi held the baby in her old, gentle arms. She looked down at his little face — those round cheeks, those tiny curled fingers, those sleepy eyes — and she cried. But these were not sad tears. Not this time. These were the happiest tears she had ever cried.

But let me tell you how we got here.

Do you remember Ruth, who walked a long road with Naomi and said, "Where you go, I will go"? And Boaz, who left extra grain in the field for her to find?

Well... Boaz and Ruth fell in love. He saw her kindness. She saw his. And in the little town of Bethlehem, surrounded by golden barley fields, Boaz took Ruth's hand and she became his wife.

Not long after, the Lord gave them a son.

And the women of the neighborhood gathered around Naomi — remember Naomi? The woman who had said, "Call me Mara — I went away full, and the Lord has brought me back empty"?

They looked at her holding that baby and said, "Blessed be the Lord! Your daughter-in-law who loves you — who is worth more to you than seven sons — has given you this child."

More to you than seven sons. That's what they said about Ruth. The foreigner. The widow. The woman who gleaned in a stranger's field.

Naomi laid the baby on her lap and became his grandmother in every way that mattered. And the neighbors gave him a name. They called him Obed.

Now, little one, here is the wonder.

Baby Obed grew up. He had a son named Jesse. And Jesse had a son named... David. Remember David? The shepherd boy who faced the giant with five smooth stones? That David.

Ruth — the Moabite woman who chose love on a dusty road — was King David's great-grandmother.

And if you follow that family line even further, it leads all the way to a stable in Bethlehem. The very same town. Where another baby would be born. A baby named Jesus.

God took a widow's small, brave choice and wove it into the greatest story ever told. She couldn't see it then. She was just picking up grain in the hot sun, holding Naomi's hand on a long road, loving the people right in front of her.

But God could see all of it.

And God was with him. God was with her. God is with you, too.

Rest a while, little one. May the same God who turned Naomi's empty arms into a cradle be quietly at work in your life too.
