For seven years, Solomon builds a house for God, with walls of gold, carved angels and great beams of cedar from Lebanon. But one thing about how it goes up makes it unlike any other building site in the world.

Solomon Builds the Temple

How the story begins: 1 Kings 6-8, retold for ages 3-8, about 3 minutes to read aloud

It took seven years. Seven. Long. Years. And when it was finished — oh. It was the most beautiful building anyone had ever seen.

Close your eyes for a second. I want you to imagine something.

Imagine the smell of cedar wood — fresh and sweet, like a forest after the rain. Imagine walls covered in gold — not painted gold, not pretend gold, but real gold, glowing warm in the lamplight. Imagine carvings of palm trees and open flowers stretching across every surface. And angels — carved angels with wide, wide wings — watching over it all. Imagine the warm air smelling like olive oil from the lamps, and frankincense from the altar. Imagine the smooth gold floor shining under your feet.

That's what Solomon built. A house for God.

Now, do you remember the tent — the tabernacle — that Moses and the people made in the desert? The one where everyone brought their gold and their jewels and their best fabrics because they wanted to? Solomon's father David had dreamed of building something even greater. A permanent house. Not a tent you carry, but a building that would stand for generations.

David gathered the plans. He collected the materials. But God told him, "Your son will build it. Not you."

So Solomon did.

He brought cedar from the mountains of Lebanon — great beams of fragrant wood, floated down the sea on rafts. He cut enormous stones, smooth and white, each one shaped and measured before it ever reached the building site. And here is the part that always makes me hold my breath.
