How it begins
God Calls Abraham

Grit under every sandal. Packs creaking on the backs of the donkeys. And behind them, the city of Haran getting smaller and smaller.
Abram was walking a road he had never traveled — and he was walking it because of one word.
God had said, "Go. Go from your country, from your relatives, and from your father's household to the land I will show you."
Abram had lived in Haran a long time. His family was there. His possessions were there. Everything around him was known.
But God did not name the land in that first command. He said, "The land I will show you."
Abram could not picture the land. It had no name yet. It had no shape. But God had more to say.
"I will make you into a great nation," God said. "I will bless you. I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you."
All the families of the earth. The families that had scattered from the tall tower — every one of them.
God's promise reached far beyond one man and one journey. It reached people Abram would never meet, in places he would never see.
Then the Bible gives us one quiet sentence:
Abram went, as the Lord had told him.
Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. His wife Sarai went with him. His nephew Lot went too. They gathered their possessions and the people who were part of their household, and they set out for the land of Canaan.
Somebody must have asked it. Lot, maybe, walking along beside him. Where are we going?

Questions to ask
- God told Abram to go to a land He did not name. How would you feel about going somewhere when nobody would tell you where it was?
- Abram packed up everything and took his whole household with him. If you were moving far away, what is the one thing you would want to bring?
- When somebody asked where they were going, Abram could only point out at the sky. What do you think Abram was thinking about right then?
- Abram piled up stones to mark the places where God spoke to him. What could you do to remember something good that happened to you today?
