Ruth and Boaz
The whole story: Ruth 2, retold for ages 3-8, about 5 minutes to read aloud
She bent down. Picked up a stalk of barley. Stood up. Bent down again. Picked up another. Stand up. Bend down. Hour after hour, under the hot sun, with dust on her hands and sweat on her face.
That's Ruth. Do you remember her? She walked a long, long road to Bethlehem with Naomi. She left everything behind. And now she needed to find food.
In those days, God had a special rule for his people. When farmers harvested their fields, they had to leave the edges. They had to leave the bits that dropped. So that anyone who was poor or hungry could come and gather what was left. It was called gleaning.
So Ruth walked out to the fields before the dew had dried. Her back ached. Her fingers turned rough. The sun beat on her shoulders.
She didn't know it yet — but this field belonged to a man named Boaz, a relative of Naomi's husband.
Later that morning, Boaz came walking out to his field. "The Lord be with you!" he called to his workers. "The Lord bless you!" they called back. That's the kind of man he was.
Then he noticed someone new. A young woman, bent low among the stalks, working harder than anyone.
"Who is that?" he asked.
"That's Ruth. The Moabite woman who came back with Naomi. She's been here since morning."
Boaz walked over to Ruth. "Don't go to any other field," he said gently. "Stay here, close to my workers. I've told the young men not to bother you. And when you're thirsty — drink from our water jars."
Ruth bowed low. "Why are you being so kind to me?" she whispered. "I'm just a foreigner."
And Boaz smiled. "I've heard all about what you've done for Naomi. How you left your own country to come to a people you didn't know. May the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take shelter, reward you richly for everything you have done."
Under whose wings. Like a baby bird, tucked safe and warm.
But here's the part I love best, little one. Here's the secret kindness.
After Ruth went back to work, Boaz pulled his workers aside. And he whispered, "Let her glean even among the sheaves — the best grain. And listen — pull some stalks out of the bundles on purpose. Drop them where she'll find them. And don't scold her — not once."
He didn't just allow her to pick up leftovers. He made sure there would be extra. Dropped on purpose. Kindness, left on the ground for her to find.
Ruth worked until evening. And when she gathered up all her grain and measured it out — it was an enormous amount. About thirty pounds of barley. Enough to make Naomi's eyes go wide as moons.
"Where on earth did you glean today?" Naomi gasped.
"In the field of a man named Boaz," Ruth said.
And Naomi's hand flew to her heart. "Boaz," she breathed. "He is family, Ruth. He is our family."
Sometimes, little one, kindness doesn't announce itself. It doesn't shout or wave its arms. Sometimes kindness just quietly drops a little extra grain where you'll find it. And you don't even know it was on purpose.
But it was. It always was.
And God was with him. God was with her. God is with you, too.
Rest now, little one. May the same God who dropped kindness in Ruth's path leave something good in yours, too.
